Dragons were also regarded in China as vehicles transporting humans to immortal realms. According to the Book of Songs, an anthology of poetries, compiled in the third century BC, dragons represent victory over the forces of darkness, cold and death. Casting light onto the Gate of Heaven, dragons allowed one to glimpse the wondrous residence of immortal beings.
