Baohedian 保和殿
The Baohedian, Hall of Preserving Harmony, was the hall for the rehearsals of ceremonies, banquets and receptions. From the reign of Emperor Qianlong, the final phase of the imperial exams took place here.
Behind the Baohedian is one of the masterpieces of the Forbidden City, the so-called “Dragon Slab”. Dating back to the Ming era, it is the largest carved marble panel of the Imperial Palace, 17 meters long and weighing about 250 tons. Depicting nine dragons with a pearl in their mouth in a dense sea of clouds, it forms the central element of the three stairs leading from the terrace to the courtyard.
